Lessons Learned and Solutions from South Korea's State of Emergency

As an economics expert, Professor Anuhya's perspective on South Korea's state of emergency seems to be a necessary awareness for all South Koreans, regardless of their political affiliation. Based on her assertions, I, as a citizen, offer my opinion on the current situation.

First, each leadership position requires commensurate capabilities. These capabilities are determined by the legitimacy of the process by which the individual ascended to the position, their demonstrated ability in the role, and their ethical standing. In South Korea, the problem lies in the fact that political, social, and religious organizations have often disregarded these capabilities, instead prioritizing superficial appearances or popularity in selecting leaders.

Therefore, this national emergency should serve as an opportunity for each citizen to cultivate these capabilities, and for political leaders to prioritize these capabilities over ideology.

Second, South Korea, as an OECD member and advanced economy, has enjoyed robust economic activity. However, this crisis has dealt a significant blow to the economy. Even advanced nations, if their political and social stability is undermined to the point of a national emergency, will see an immediate outflow of foreign capital, and companies considering investment will turn away.

Furthermore, South Korea's geopolitical position, surrounded by major powers such as China, Russia, and Japan, makes it vulnerable to becoming a flashpoint for war. The instability and warfare in Ukraine, Russia, Israel, and the Middle East are not distant events; they could easily occur on the Korean Peninsula.

Regarding the President's alleged violation of the constitution, the decision to step down or face impeachment is not easily made using the conventional arguments of the conservative and progressive camps, with some citizens expressing differing opinions. Therefore, post-emergency, wisdom is needed to quickly resolve the situation.

Therefore, this opportunity should be used to address the President's violation of the constitution, and simultaneously assess their capabilities and ethics as a leader, leading to a swift judgment. This approach would allow for a politically and socially wise resolution, garnering the support of most citizens.
